The error has been corrected and John Bingham joins us tonight on Back of Pack Endurance. You can say John is the founding member of our tight little community, and it is truly an honor to get to speak with him about his influence on the sport of running, he writing, and how he feels now that he is on his farewell tour about his mark on running. John is the author of many articles and books, including “The Courage to Start” and “An Accidental Athlete”, both of which are outstanding reads and well worth the time. This is a special episode of “BOPE”. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did recording it.
The Man Who Ruined Running article from 2004 can still be read online. Take a look at it.
The True Meaning of the Back of the Pack from John Bingham:
“I also discovered that some of the hardest fought battles are not those in the front of the field. They are being fought in the back of the pack by those of us with nothing at stake but our pride.”
“I am a runner because I run. Not because I run fast. Not because I run far. I am a runner because I say I am. And no one can tell me I’m not.”
“Eliminate the ‘should’s’ in your life”
“Involve your children in things they suck at”
“If you run, you are a runner. It doesn’t matter how fast or how far. It doesn’t matter if today is your first day or if you’ve been running for twenty years. There is no test to pass, no license to earn, no membership card to get. You just run.”
“Do not be afraid to fail. Be afraid to accept that who you are right now is all you are going to be.”
